Child friendly building game and social networking platform
ROBLOX is a multiplayer online game engine for children to build worlds and games with digital blocks.
This platform is like a mix between Legos, Minecraft and Second Life. Kids, teenagers and the young at heart can use digital blocks to build games, environments and worlds for others to enjoy. To join the ROBLOX community, you need to sign up for an account and install the ROBLOX package. Installation takes a while, but once the package is completely installed, you can run the game engine and fully explore the site.
The website portion of Roblox.com is a cross between a social network and a blog. You can start out by designing your character, connecting with friends and other players and then go on to build your own worlds and ROBLOX games. Clicking on "Build" under your profile will take you into a blank green field where you can experiment with the controls.
Though the game engine can be buggy on occasion, it is simple to install and run. The controls are a bit clunky but relatively easy to use once you get the hang of it. There are only a few options to choose from, which mostly involve manipulating the ROBLOX, such as placing a block, deleting a block, rotating a block and choosing a different type of block. The interface and the game itself are not very sophisticated and, unlike a platform such as Second Life, clearly are designed for children. ROBLOX looks like an excellent way to engage children's creativity and brainpower.
The basic account is free, but to purchase certain items or play certain games you need to use real money to buy the in-game currency, which is called ROBUX. There are also upgraded accounts that require a monthly membership fee. They provide a daily allowance of Robux and features such as the ability to join and create groups.
Because ROBLOX has a fairly simple interface and concept, it is a good way for children to express their creativity and interact with other gamers online.
